Into the mountain

Logan made steady progress down the face of the sheer cliffs until he was halfway down. All the while he scanned all aspects of the rock for any signs of a cave or similar that may help them.

Realistically their task was mammoth, looking at the size of the area Logan realised they were looking for a needle in a haystack. Sweat soon beaded on his brow and his fingers began to sting as he shimmied across the jagged rocks delicately.

‘Logan, can you hear me?’ His father’s voice blurted out of the radio on his harness.

‘I hear you, dad,’ Logan replied as he flicked the transmit button as he pulled the small radio to his mouth.

‘Your sister has found something in the diary,’ Logan held the receiver close to his ear against the whistle of the wind around him. ‘We need you to climb across about fifty metres to your right. There’s some sort of ledge and your sister thinks we should look there.’

Before replying Logan pulled his guide rope tight and leant himself back and away from the cliff face. His new position let him look in the direction his father was directing him.

‘Looks simple enough.’ Logan replied.

‘Your sister is going to stay on the rope you’re on, and I’m going to anchor a new safety line across from where you are. By the time you get there, it should be ready, and I’ll come down and join you.’

‘Ok,’

Logan felt a wave of relief, craning himself as far as he could he saw the silhouette of Gabe high above jogging along the jagged edge of the cliff. Replacing the radio on the harness Logan reaffirmed his grip on the wall and carefully made his way across the face of the rough stone.

As Gabe had worked to check the safety rope he had set up for Logan, Claudia had begun scouring the pages of the journal again.

The air between them was still tense but with both of their minds occupied it gave them no opportunity to dwell on their frustrations.

It was as Gabe had hammered more anchors into the stones Claudia had found a rough sketch on one page of the journal. On its own it appeared to be nothing more than a random, very rough, drawing of a rock. The age had no context, no words were written just the sketch of stone.

It was only when Claudia compared the drawing to the Google Maps 3D image on her phone that it made sense. Sliding the images across the screen, she eventually found something that looked similar on the aerial images.

‘Dad, I think I’ve found something.’ Claudia had declared nonchalantly.

With the anchoring points as secure as they could be Gabe had looked at what his daughter had found. True to form, when Claudia was left to her own devices she was a formidable problem solver. As Gabe compared the sketch and the aerial images he understood where she was coming from.

Between them, it had taken them another fifteen minutes to pinpoint the exact area in respect of where they had set themselves up.
